The 5th leg of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series took place over the weekend in Las Vegas and what a tournament it was for Danny Barrett. His HSBC player of the Final performance was nothing short of immense and he rightfully took home the award after scoring a double in front of a vocal home crowd.
The bull-dozing forward was in flying form for the duration of the tournament scoring four tries, the fourth most for a player over the course of the weekend. However, it was in the final where he showed his true class. In a night that will go down in history as USA’s first series win on home soil, Barrett was truly Devastating in attack. His performance was full of power and pace, as well as athleticism in the air which certainly gave his team the edge in the final.
While the USA team showed incredible form throughout the tournament, you'd be mistaken to think that their first win of 2018 wasn't without obstacles. Missing their captain, Madison Hughes going into the tournament and losing Martin Iosefo in the semi-final meant they really had to pull together as a squad to get their second HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series win.
”It's such a team effort, we've worked so hard for so long. Three straight years in a semi-final in Las Vegas and to come here, missing our captain and missing a number of players, it's just so amazing to win on home soil. A second Cup final ever for the USA and it feels great to be at home."
In his sides 21 – 0 cup final win over Argentina, Barrett was exceptional on attack, bagging himself an unforgettable double. Arguably, his most important came in the later stages of the first half. Getting the ball in his own half, the big forward showed his skill, throwing a beautiful offload to unleash Baker out wide who duly obliged with a pass back giving the big forward the chance to hit the gas and finish off a fantastic try.
In the 12th minute of the game, Barrett was subbed off after a flawless performance. Two minutes later he was the first player on the pitch celebrating and congratulating with his team mates.
The 6th leg of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series take place in Canada and if last year is anything to by, we should be in for massive crowds and more jaw dropping sevens rugby. Danny Barrett will be hoping he can put in a similar performance as his side look to build on their excellent form in Las Vegas.
