World Rugby Coach of the Year nominee Ben Ryan, who this year led Fiji to the country’s first ever Olympic medal (gold) at Rio 2016 and a second successive HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series title, will lead a discussion on the future of coaching at the World Rugby Conference and Exhibition 2016 (ConfEx) in London on 14-15 November.
Ryan will be joined by former Samoan captain and current Connacht head coach Pat Lam, who led the Irish province to its first major trophy with victory in the Guinness PRO12 earlier this year. Former England and British and Irish Lions international Nigel Redman, who coached the England U20 team before taking up a position as Head of Performance Team Development at British Swimming in 2014, completes the Future of coaching - creating a winning culture panel.
The trio of experienced coaches will provide unions, clubs and members of the wider rugby and sporting community with valuable insight into ways to maximise performance in a constantly evolving game while ensuring the sport remains exciting and retains its fan appeal. Taking place on day one of the conference, the panel of experts will examine modern coaching trends and techniques, discuss how the right coach can create a winning culture and what rugby can learn from other sports.
In addition, the ConfEx 2016 agenda will also feature an insightful plenary session on the role big data is playing in enhancing player performance, monitoring fitness, analysing opposition and preventing injury. Performance management – a data driven approach will bring together industry-leading athlete performance and analytics specialists to debate how an evidence-based, technology driven approach to performance can assist players and coaches and what the future of this growth area might hold.
The performance management panel, which will follow on day two of the conference, will feature expert analysis from:
- Karl Hogan – Global Head of League and Data Partnerships, Catapult
- Paul Neilson – Marketing Manager, STATS (formerly Prozone)
- Stephen Smith – CEO and Founder, Kitman Labs
- Rob Vickerman – Former England Sevens captain and Premiership player, MD of workathlete
World Rugby Chief Executive Brett Gosper said: “The ConfEx 2016 theme of The future of rugby is really coming to the fore with these two panels and will offer those present with plenty of expert tips, analysis and insight, which they can take away and use for the benefit of their own club or union.
“Added to that ConfEx 2016 provides participants with excellent opportunities to network with leading figures and decision-makers from across rugby and the wider world of sport and we invite all those with an interest in the future development of the game to join us at World Rugby ConfEx 2016. It will be an occasion not to be missed.”
Taking place on the eve of the World Rugby ConfEx 2016 for the first time this year will be the World Rugby Awards. The Awards, to be staged at the Hilton London Metropole on 13 November, will celebrate the accomplishments of players, coaches, teams and others from across the globe during 2016.
