The fiercely contested Cup quarter-finals give fans a stellar semi-final line up tomorrow as Fiji face USA, and Argentina face South Africa whilst New Zealand, England, Kenya and Australia all compete for 5th place in Las Vegas.

Speaking on the day’s action and their place in the Cup semi-finals USA Captain Ben Pinkelman reflected on four wins from four and a home semi-final in Las Vegas. “We came in to this tournament knowing we’ve made the semi-final three years in a row and it was all about taking that next step. So were just going to come out, stick to our game-plan and hopefully we will be able to make it all the way to that Cup.”

In the Challenge Trophy France, Scotland, Wales and Canada all progressed to Sunday’s semi-finals after wins over Uruguay, Russia, Samoa and Spain respectively.  France will face Wales in the first Trophy semi-final and Scotland will face Canada in the second. In the battle for 13th place, Uruguay will open proceedings against Samoa on Sunday at 1100, followed by Russia v Spain.

CUP QUARTER-FINALS

Fiji v New Zealand opened the Cup quarter-finals, the two sides having already seen some epic encounters this season and a narrow margin of historic meetings with New Zealand winning 47 of their meetings and Fiji 46 times.  Fiji’s Jerry Tuwai marked his intent breaking away at the off before being pulled down with the line in sight. The tackle was high and Fiji capitalised off the penalty, Amenoni Nasilasila's offload to Vatemo Ravouvou open the scoring. New Zealand responded with a try from young All Black Sevens Vilimoni Koroi. New Zealand's final platform of the half comes from a lineout five metres out, keeping the ball tight to roll a driving maul over the line before the end of the half. Fiji saw the impact of Alasio Naduva from the bench, his footballing skills pinning New Zealand back into their own half before both sides fiercely contest the breakdown and the All Blacks Sevens gained the turnover. With a minute left on the clock New Zealand had field position and the lineout, however, Fiji's work at the breakdown gives them the ball back. With ten seconds left on the clock one final twist sees Fiji gain two penalties in quick succession and Tuwai is the man of the moment delivering Fiji the try, one minute and 38 seconds after the hooter.

Looking to make it four from four, hosts USA opened scoring in their quarter-final with England via Perry Baker. The try would be the first of a hattrick for Baker, the second score coming minutes later the third in the first minute of the second. Ollie Lindsay-Hague answered back for England crossing the line just before the break to bring the score to 12-5 to the USA. In the second half Baker’s third try was only added to by England’s Dan Norton, his 279th series try, but the home side held strong as Harry Glover tried to get the miracle offload away to Norton and the game ended 17-12 to the Eagles.

There was no time for the crowd to get their breath back as Argentina and Kenya took to the field next. Conrad Roura opened Argentina's account with a quick solo score, pouncing on a loose ball to cross. Gastón Revola added the conversion but Kenya Nelson Oyoo had the speed to finish Kenya's score on the outside Eden Agero adding the extras. Felipe del Mestre added another try for Argentina before the break but it’s Kenya who come flying out of the gate in the second half with a Willy Ambaka try. With time running down Lautaro Bazán Vélez makes the yards forwards before it flies wide to Renzo Barbier who secures the last points of the half, enough to secure a 17-12 victory for Los Pumas 7s.

The last quarter-final and game of the day saw series leaders South Africa victorious with a 29-17 win over Australia. Australia opened the scoring with a try from John Porch, who added another before the break, but Blitzbok’s Philip Snyman and Ryan Oosthuizen, who scored his first try for his country, levelled the score by half time. Cecil Afrika was first to the line in the second half, taking his series circuit points tally to 1385. He was followed by Ruhan Nel and Selvyn Davids. Australia has the final say on the scoreboard with a try from Jeral Skelton but it was the Blitzboks who sealed their place in the semi-finals.
