The HSBC Cape Town Sevens was a strange tournament for New Zealand's Joe Ravouvou. The 104kg marauding winger started the tournament suspended for three games, following a high tackle in the final of the Dubai Sevens. Ravouvou ended Cape Town as the HSBC Player of the Final.

The 26-year-old is a daunting player to face on the sevens circuit. A huge presence and buckets of pace, he can finish from almost anywhere on the pitch. In his side's 38-14 Cup final win over Argentina, their first tournament victory since Vancouver in 2016, Ravouvou showed how unstoppable he is by taking on four Argentina defenders to score. He later added to this with a scything diagonal run through the weary Argentine defence.

"It means a lot to me to win player of the final," said Ravouvou. "It's my first Cup win with the team and it's a really special one for the fans and my family watching back at home. It means a lot to all the boys and we're happy with what we achieved here."

In Ravouvou's first match of the tournament against England in the Cup quarter-final, he scored the winning try in the corner to make an immediate impact. In the semi-final against South Africa Ravouvou received a yellow card for a late tackle, but once returned to the pitch made a storming break down the right wing and set up a try for Joe Webber, showing he makes an impact whenever he plays.

The next round of the series takes place in Sydney, on 28-30 January.
