The special €1 postage stamp to celebrate Ireland's hosting of Women's Rugby World Cup 2017 was unveiled by captain Niamh Briggs at the General Post Office in Dublin on Thursday.

The stamp features an image of Briggs in action in Ireland's historic victory over four-time champions New Zealand at WRWC 2014 in France, which was taken by Dan Sheridan of Inpho Photography.

It isn't the first time that an Irish player has featured on a commemorative stamp with former captain Paul O'Connell the last a decade ago, but Briggs is the first women's player and the stamp reflects the tournament's importance in Ireland.

Briggs admitted it was "very surreal" to feature on the commemorative stamp, an honour rarely bestowed on a living person.

"It's such an honour to represent Irish women's rugby on this special postage stamp," Briggs admitted.

"It marks this special even for Ireland and will really increase awareness of the tournament in the lead-up to the Women's Rugby World Cup.

"The country has truly embraced women's rugby and the Women's Rugby World Cup on home soil will be a celebration of all sports and all those who play and support women's support."

The stamps and a limited edition First Day Cover envelope can be viewed and purchased at irishstamps.ie, at main post offices and the Dublin GPO's stamp shop.
