Peru capped a remarkable week of results by overwhelming Costa Rica 61-5 in Medellin to claim the South American B Championship honours, finishing the four-team tournament as the only side with an unbeaten record.

The Peruvians had caused two shocks in their earlier matches, beating Venezuela 13-5 and then hosts Colombia 21-7, both of whom were ranked significantly higher than them in the IRB World Rankings.

A 14-place elevation to 64th in the IRB World Rankings was Peru's reward with Colombia falling 12 places themselves after also losing to Venezuela 28-26 on the final day of the tournament.

There was better news for Colombia with their next generation winning the Junior B tournament which ran alongside the senior event. Colombia conceded only 12 points in three matches to take the title from Peru, Venezuela and Costa Rica.

Algeria triumph in Africa

Meanwhile, in Africa another nation tasting success was Algeria after they overcame hosts Egypt 50-0 in the CAR Development Trophy 2010 final on Friday in Cairo.

The Algerians proved the dominant force in the four-team tournament, winning their opening match against Libya by the same scoreline at the American University of Cairo Stadium.

In the match for third place Mauritania recovered from their narrow 10-5 defeat against Egypt to overcome Libya by the same scoreline.

Following on from the tension surrounding recent soccer matches between the two nations, the final between Algeria and Egypt was played out under heightened media scrutiny who wondered whether rugby could repair the damage.

"This match has been a great success for our sport and the attitude of the players, coaching staff and supporters has been remarkable," commented the IRB Regional Development Manager for Northern Africa, Jean-Luc Barthes.

"I think that after this match the image of rugby has changed in Egypt and all the participants have honoured our sport."
