The International Wheelchair Rugby Federation (IWRF), in partnership with the Rio 2016 Organising Committee have announced the final schedule for wheelchair rugby at the Paralympic Games.

The wheelchair rugby competition will feature eight nations hailing from Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Great Britain, Japan, Sweden and the United States.

Play gets underway on Wednesday, 15 September with defending Paralympic champions Australia taking on Great Britain in the first match of the day. USA face France and then it's the turn of Japan and Sweden to do battle in the no-holds-barred sport. An exciting first day's schedule is brought to a close when Canada play Brazil.

“We have spent several years working towards this point and it’s exciting to think that the sport will be back on the global stage," said Richard Allcroft, IWRF technical delegate for the Rio 2016 Paralympics.

"Rio is an amazing city and the Brazilian people know how to create an atmosphere. I can’t wait to see the athletes in the stadium competing; the slot for Paralympic champion is open and any of the top teams in the world could take that prestigious gold medal home.”

Australia claimed gold at London 2012 after a 66-51 win against Canada. The United States took bronze, with Japan finishing fourth and Great Britain fifth, which was one place lower than they managed in Beijing four years earlier.
