Brazil are in pole position to win a 12th consecutive South American title after dominating day one of the Aquece Rio International Women's Rugby Sevens tournament at the Deodoro Olympic Park on Saturday.

Brazil, who have won 55 consecutive matches in the Sudamérica Rugby Women's Sevens Championship, were undefeated in Pool A on a pulsating first day of action after defeating Peru 59-0, Uruguay 40-0 and Venezuela 22-0 at the Deodoro Rugby Park. They now face Chile in the quarter-finals on Sunday.

Argentina were also in impressive mood, having defeated Paraguay 32-0, Chile 41-0 and one of the favourites Colombia 19-15 to top Pool B. A final showdown with Brazil beckons, but they must first negotiate a tricky quarter-final against Peru on Sunday.

Argentina's Olympic Games dreams are alive, but they will need to win the Repechage tournament in Dublin in June if they are to return to the Deodoro Olympic Park in August.

Colombia and Venezuela also remain in the hunt for a medal, finishing second in their respective pools after impressive performances in Rio's heat. Venezuela also travel to Dublin for the Repechage in June with Olympic Games hopes still alive.

On an historic day for the sport, the players turned on the style in front of the world's media, who had gathered at the Deodoro to see the latest phase of operational testing for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

The action was competitive, compelling and often breath-taking as the strength and depth of women's rugby sevens in South America was clearly demonstrated by the performances of Peru and Venezuela, who impressed.

Brazil's Baby Futuro said: "I'm pretty happy that we finished top as that was our objective. We need to work on some details ahead of tomorrow, but hopefully we will continue this form into the finals day.”

With the event providing important operational testing ahead of the Games, World Rugby Head of Competitions and Performance Mark Egan said he was pleased with progress.

"This is an important milestone in our readiness for the Olympic Games. The venue looks great. The playing surface is superb and we have been able to test a number of functional areas, which is invaluable,” said Egan.

"The teams are telling us that they are excited to be the first to inaugurate the venue and are happy with the support that they have received. The next step is construction of the 15,000 capacity temporary stadium, which will begin in April.”

The day two action kicks off at 10:00 local time (GMT -3).
