Who are we?
World Rugby is the international sports federation for rugby. As the global governing body, World Rugby is responsible for delivering on the mission of growing the global rugby family.
The organisation has responsibility for the management of several global rugby tournaments including Rugby World Cup, Women’s Rugby World Cup, men’s and women’s Rugby World Cup Sevens, men’s and women’s Sevens World Series and the U20 World Championship and Trophy.
Since the creation in November 2014 of the World Rugby brand (replacing the former International Rugby Board name), the organisation has been evolving from a strategy of “Regulation to Inspiration”. World Rugby’s ambition is to grow the game by inspiring and engaging new audiences and players around the world, reflecting our mission to build a stronger connection with fans, players and new audiences worldwide. An example of this is the Get Into Rugby programme, which is one of World Rugby’s strategic platforms to increase participation in rugby across the world.
Globally, there are more than 7.2 million players playing rugby on a regular basis, with 120 member unions managing the game and its development in their respective countries.
World Rugby employs almost 100 staff globally, with its headquarters located in Dublin, Ireland. World Rugby has three official languages: English, French and Spanish. Given the international nature of its business and the various activities undertaken by each division, the roles employed by World Rugby operate across a number of departments:
This office is made up of the Chief Executive Officer of World Rugby, who reports to the Chairman and the World Rugby Executive Council.
Commercial, Broadcast and Marketing
This team is responsible for the management of World Rugby’s digital, social, media and public affairs functions to inspire and promote the growth and development of rugby globally through multiple mediums and languages.
The role of Technical Services is to proactively lead and manage the adherence to the technical standards of the game in light of trends and patterns seen through analysis and monitoring of the sport. This is done through the vehicles of training and education, anti-doping management, game analysis and medical research.
Competitions and Performance (CAP)
The team manage the delivery of all World Rugby Sevens and 15s tournaments (outside of the men’s Rugby World Cup) including women’s and men’s Sevens World Series, strategic investment tournaments, U20 World Championship, Women’s Rugby World Cup and the delivery of rugby Sevens at the Olympic Games and other multi-sport competitions.
They are also responsible for the implementation and monitoring of World Rugby’s annual high performance investment programme and the selection and performance management of international match officials.
Rugby World Cup (RWC)
Rugby World Cup is the largest tournament delivered by World Rugby. The RWC department is responsible for managing the selection, planning and delivery of all elements of a RWC tournament, working closely with each host country to ensure they are provided with the support and tools to maximise the success of each event.
Development and International Relations (DIR)
This team is responsible for the governance structures of World Rugby, which includes the management of player eligibility issues, release and match/tournament approvals, as well as management of relationships with external bodies such as the IOC, ASOIF, SportAccord and other international federations, governments, union and regional associations. DIR also leads the development arm of the organisation including women’s rugby and regional development of the game across six regions.
Legal and Legislative Affairs
This team is responsible for legal risk management and the contractual arrangements put in place by and with World Rugby. Additionally, it has the responsibility of protecting the integrity of the game and regulatory authority of the organisation through the design and implementation of world-class legislative and regulatory rules, processes and enforcement.
Finance, IT and Travel (FIT)
FIT is a central function that supports the entire organisation on all financial management, forecasting, budgetary and investment grant management levels. Finance also manages the group investment portfolio, all aspects of taxation exposure and insurance. The department also operates a stand-alone IT service delivery function across tournaments, projects and organisation infrastructure and an in-house travel department.
This department manages World Rugby’s digital, social, media and public affairs functions to inspire and promote the growth and development of rugby globally through multiple mediums and languages.
This team is responsible for the management of strategic planning and annual organisation priorities in addition to the global Human Resources Management function which supports all World Rugby employees.
